If you care to trace the history of the bonsai gardening plant, you will find mention of this art as far back as the Egyptian era, some 2,000 years ago.  Historians report that Indians were dwarfing certain useful trees so that they could easily carry them around. The Chinese, as we know it today, created bonsai, around 700 AD.

During that period, the Japanese, who thought that all the good things came from China, lifted the principles of bonsai gardening plant then called “en tsai” (Chinese for ‘growing plants in a tray’) and applied the technique to perfection in Japan after christening the plants as bonsai (Japanese for ‘growing plants in a tray’!)

The Bonsai Art Gathers Global Appreciation

For many centuries the beauty and results of this peculiar art remained confined within Japan. It was not until the 17th century that the rest of the world really took notice of the bonsai gardening plant.  In 1878 Japan took the world by storm with its bonsai exhibition and ever since, people all over the world have been curious to know and practice the art of bonsai.

There are two major types of bonsai: One is the tropical bonsai, also known as the indoor bonsai, which adapts heartily to summer and its scarcity of water by gathering moisture in the roots. However, this makes it extremely vulnerable to frost during bad winters. The other type is the temperate bonsai.

Normally speaking, the bonsai is an outdoor plant. But there are a number of plants that benefit from the shelter of the indoors. One example is the fichus tree, which always needs to be protected from the cold.  These are the types of plants that are specially groomed for beautifying the indoors, like the tropical bonsai.

Whether you keep it indoors or outdoors, the bonsai gardening plant will make you understand how alive a plant can be. This plant almost interacts with you on a daily basis, as it needs constant attention in terms of watering, feeding with fertilizer, pruning, shaping, and root shaping. While growing a bonsai gardening plant, you learn to love it like one of your babies.

The satisfaction that people get from successfully growing a bonsai cannot be put in words. The fact that it takes three to seven years to get a good size and shape bonsai gardening plant, makes this plant an expensive and all consuming hobby – though it is one that is the most satisfying of all possible hobbies.
